What Happens During An Interior Design Consultation?

Date
January 28, 2026

For many people, booking an interior design consultation can feel like a huge step and perhaps a little overwhelming. You might be unsure what to expect, how much preparation is needed, or whether it's the right time to involve an interior designer at all.

A consultation is designed to offer clarity, direction and reassurance - not pressure! It's an opportunity to talk through your ideas, ask questions and explore what's possible for your home in a relaxed manner.

Here's what you can expect from the design consultation process with our studio.

Before The Consultation

Once your consultation is booked, I'll ask a couple of simple questions about your home and what you're hoping to achieve. This helps me understand the context of the project in advance, whether that's for a single room refresh, a larger, multi-room renovation or full housebuild.

There is no need to have everything all figured out ahead of time. Mood boards, inspiration images and firm decisions are not at all required, but if you have any floor plans or Pinterest boards, you're more than welcome to share them. Many clients book a consultation precisely because they feel unsure about what direction to take and that's exactly what we're here for.

During The Consultation

The consultation itself is a relaxed, collaborative conversation, either in your home or online depending on the project.

We'll talk through:

  • How you currently use the space (and what isn't working for you)
  • Your priorities, lifestyle and practical needs
  • Any ideas you've been considering, even if they were just first thoughts
  • Budget considerations and timescales (not to worry if you're unsure of these at this stage)
  • The overall feel you'd like your home to have

I'll ask you a few, relaxed questions, offer my initial thoughts and professional insight and help you understand the options available to you. This might include discussing layout ideas, finishes, lighting, colour schemes or how best to phase a project.

Where helpful, I'll bring along a selection of paint charts, samples or reference materials to explore ideas together and give you a clearer sense of direction.

What You'll Come Away With

By the end of the consultation, clients typically leave with:

  • Greater clarity on how their space could work
  • A clearer sense of priorities and next steps
  • Professional guidance tailored specifically to their home
  • Confidence around whether to move forward with a design service and the process involved

Some clients use the consultation as standalone advice, while others choose to continue into a full design service. If you choose to move ahead with full-service design, the fee for the consultation is taken off of your overall design fee, however, there's no obligation either way.

After The Consultation

Following our consultation, I'll outline the most appropriate next steps based on what we've discussed and email you a 'Follow-Up Report' including any advice that's been given and links to products we may have mentioned.
